no gesso. Some pages have black ink as the first layer some have acrylic. Close the book and open again. let dry. Second layer scraped on acrylic, close book, open book let dry. third layer a wash of diluted acrylics. Close book, open , let dry. Brown and yellow pages is finished with a sample pot of brush wood. Two part stuff, put on the yellow which should be grained with a tool and left to dry and finished with the clear coloured varnish layer. But I never use stuff for what its supposed to be used for......
